KNIGHTHOOD FOR THE
SECRETARY.

London, May 23. '■'. His Majesty the King has conferred knighthood upon Mr. John Kirk, who for 40 years has filled the position of secretary .to the. Ragged School Union.
Mr. Kirk was born at Kegworth in Leicestershire in 184-9. He was assistant-secre-tary of the Ragged School Union from 1873 to 1879, and has been secretary since the latter year. He organised (Pearson's Fresh Air Fund,* the Christmas Guest Guild, and Sir W. Trejoar's Christmas Hampers. He edits the monthly journal of the Ragged School Union. The union was ; established m 1844 for destitute and neglected children.
