ANOTHER NEW STEAMER.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION*.]
Dunedin, Friday. The laying down and building of four new steamers for the Union Steam Ship Company—the Marania, Maori, Waihora, and Koniata —together with a tug. were all announced some time ago. Since then it was mentioned that a fifth new steamer was projected. Recently the company placed two palatial steamer*—the Atua and the Navua—in the Island trade ; but now they apparently intend to go one better, for a new steamer is to be built of 4000 tons gross register, or 500 tons larger than the Atua. She will also embody many improvements. When the new steamer has been completed the and the Atua will carry out regular monthly trips to the various ports in the Tongan, Navigator, and Fiji Islands, while the Navua will run between Auckland and Fiji direct. The new ship will be completed and in commission early next year.
