London*, January 26. The retiring Chief-Secretary for Ireland (Mr. Bryce). speaking at Dublin yesterday, announced the intention of the Government to create a new college in Dublin without any kind of theological test or grant from the public funds for theological purposes. The Royal University is to be dissolved and Dublin University is to become a national institution, and to include Trinity College, and the new college in Dublin and the colleges at Belfast and Cork.
Recent cablegrams have indicated that it is the intention of the Government to establish a college at Dublin for the Roman Catholics. The present Dublin University is better known as Trinity College. The Royal University was founded in 1880. and with it are associated the Queen's Colleges at Belfast. Cork, and (lalway. The Royal Commission of 1901 recommended that the Royal University should he reconstructed as a teaching university with four constituent colleges—those at Belfast. Cork, and' (Jr.!way, and a new Roman Catholic college at Dublin. The Commissioners further recommended that the chairs in the Roman Catholic college should be open to persons of all denominations, and that the. existing Catholic University School of Medicine should form the medical faculty of the college. It will be seen that the Government is following somewhat closely the recommendations of the Royal Commission.
