THE GOLDFIELDS.
MAORILAND. { [BY 'I'KI.KIIKW'H. — OWN f.OHIIKSPONDKNT.] I Waitii, Friday. j The secretary of the Maoriland Gold Min- ', I ing Company received the following wire j j to-day from the battery manager (Mr. J. I I Noble): "Have crushed eight, tons of the j I 20-ton trial parcel from the northern end ! I of the Young New Zealand reef, which 1 ! gives an assay value of £2 6s Id per top. ' I at the lip of the mortar-box. 1 »— j I THK XKW ZEALAND CROWN MINKS. ! ["BY TKLKt.KU'Ii. —OWN' I tIBRK.SPON'DK.NT.] j j W.VHJI. Friday. ! i Though the water-race, which lias render- 1 ! ed (lie Crown Company such good service ; j in the past, was practically destroyed by I ; the late flood, the steam power of the re- j j dilution works has been brought, into re- j ! quisition, and crushing is once, more pro- j I ceeding. Thcro is nothing new to report, 1 ! from the new development at No. 5 level, j below the Waitn.wheta tunnel. The lode in I I the north face is still about. sft wide, butit is ft little smaller at the southern face. The quality right through remains much the. same. The new lode ! j east of the Welcome continues to pro- i i vide a large, quantity of milling ore, and is I proving a valuable asset to the company, , 'the crosscut run out from the rise proved the lode, to be about. sft wide. The cross- ! cut is being continued on with a view to I ascertaining if the whole of the lode forma- ' tion hue been penetrated. Where cut through the reef contains ore of a- rubbly nature. NEW WAITKKAUBI. 1 [by ri;u:i;n.vriT. — OWN CORRESPOKDKN'T.] | j Waiiii, Friday. j 'The rise carried up on the new lode recently intersected at the Harvo level, in the New ! 1 Waitekattri mine, has attained .1 height of j i about 18ft, and for this distance the reef | looks well. It is intended to carry the j rise much further tip in order to ascertain j how far up (ho pay ore carries. The al- ' j terations to the battery arc to be pushed | ahead vigorously, and it is quite possible ; that the 'Harvc' level and the battery will ; be connected by means of an aerial tram, i Tiie fall between the two points is regard- ; ed as very satisfactory, and the aerial tram 1 snould prove a very economic method of i transit. !
MINK MANAGERS' REPORTS. New Monowni (January 14}: A drive has been extended through the reef for 18ft from the (op of the rise towards the bottom of the winze, which is apparently olwit the- centre of the lode. The ore broken in the drive appears to be nf good quality, showing payable ore to be of wider dimension than had Iwn anticipated. A great quantity is of a friable nature, carrying good minerals. When the contractors complete their job operations in the mine will be stopped to allow alterations to the battery to be effected.
