SUGAR IN LEATHER.
THE STOPPING OF AUSTRALIAN CONSIGNMENTS.

London, January 24. The Agent-General for New South Wales (Mr. Coghlan) has had an interview with the Commissioners for Customs, who have arranged that Australian leather shall no longer be stopped for analysis. The Customs officers are to charge duty on the quantities of sugar stated on the export, certificates.
Large consignments of Australian leather were detained recently in English ports by the Customs officials, who claimed duty on '(2 per cent, of sugar used in manufacture, wht»r»as the export, certificate showed only 7 per cent. Mr. Cojrhlan at once took the matter in ham!, and demanded that American and Argentine leather should have the same treatment as Australian.
