THE LAND BILL.
•STATEMENT BY HON. J. MILLAR.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRKSS ASSOCIATION'.]
Wellington-, Tuesday. The Hon. J. Millar, Minister for Labour. speakiug at the 'Marine Engineers* dinner last night, alluded to the Land Bill, and, after explaining its intent, said it had'been urged that the graduated land tax should be employed instead of the limitation of area. Such a tax, he said, to serve its purpose, ihuet be so heavy that it would not pay owners to keep surplus land, and they would be induced to sell large portions at once, and two million pounds' worth of land would be placed on the market at one time. The result would be a. depreciation iii land values all over the country. That Was not desirable. It was tetter to give 10 years in which the land would be gradually thrown open to the people.
