P. AND O. STEAMER WRECKED.
THE MONGOLIA ASHORE.
DUE TO REMARKABLE TIDES. PASSENGERS SAFELY LANDED. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— (Received September 18, 11.35 p.m.) London. September 18. The P. and O. Company's fine steamer Mongolia, bound from Hongkong for Australia, has gone ashore on Midway Island, in the Pacific Ocean. Her hull is pierced, and the bow is resting on rocks. Her passengers have been safely landed. Lighters are taking off the cargo, which exccecls in value that of the United States steamer Manchuria, stranded recently. The disaster, it is stated, was due to extraordinary tidal phenomena.
The Mongolia is one of the well-known fleet of the P. and 0.. Company, trading between Loudon and Australia. She is it steel steamer of the following dimensions : --Length. 520.9 ft; breadth, 58.3 ft; depth, 33.3 ft; tonnage, 9505. She was built by Caird and Co., at Greenock, Scotland, in 1903. The steamer left London on August 17 for ' Australian ports, and culled at Suez on September 1.
