DISEASE AMONG FISH.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Mastehtox, Monday. With reference to the report that certain fish at the Masterton trout hatchery are suffering from a cancerous growth, Mr. W. D. Ay son, the curator, states that the growth is tumor called " gill disease," and is frequently found in fish kept in hatcheries for spawning purposes. The disease has only been 'Contracted 'by a few of the fish at the hatcheries, and is not nit all general. These suffering from the growth are being experimented upon by Mr Oilruth. chief Government veterinarian. The cause of the disease is lack of certain natural food. Fish in the natural state, through preying upon one another, obtain pancreas, or sweet bread food, which is necessary to healthy thriving. The fish at the hatcheries have been partially fed with animal pancreas, but this does not appear to be a satisfactory substitute for the pancreas of fish.
