A BUDDHIST PILGRIM.

THE TASHI LAMA AT BENARES

By Telegraph Press Association.—Copyright.

London, December 19. The Tashi Lama of Tibet has visited the Buddhist ruins o£ Sarnath, near Benares. Elaborate ceremonies of adoration were held, and they ended in the Tashi Lama being transfigured, and the other Lamas worshipping him.

The Tashi Lama is the present ruler of Tibet. _ He is on a visit to India at the invitation of the- Government to meet the Prince and Princess of Wales. He is one of.the most devout of the Buddhist priests in Tibet. Benares for tho long period of 800 years was the headquarters of Buddhism, but in the fourth century B.C. the people reverted to Brahmin ism, the ancient faith, of -which it is now the chief centre. The city is visited annually .by many thousands of wealthy pilgrims, both 1 Buddhist and Brahmin. Sarnath;- is the original site of the city, and here colossal Buddhist ruins are found in all directions. Readers of Kipling's story " Kim " will have some understanding of the feeling- of reverence with which the Tibetan priest would visit the remains of tho ancient temples of his faith.
