MEMORIAL TO A MAORI CHIEF.
A vert handsome monument is to be erected over the grave of the late Major Te K&epa Rangipauwho, a famous chief of the Tuhourangi tribe at Rotorua. The monument, which is of red granite, has just been completed by Messrs. W. Parkinson and Co., of this city, and consists of a ,column surmounted by a Celtic cross. On the base of the column is carved a sword and belt, to commemorate a gift to the deceased chieftain by Queen Viotoria. A massive railing is , also to bo placed around the grave. The monument will be very imposing. The following inscription will be carved upon • the granite both in English and Maori: —" Sacred to the memory of Te Iveepa Rangipainvhe, chief of the Tahourangi' tribe, a leader of the Arawa and major of the N.Z. Militia. Born about 1826. Died, June 27, 1905. He was a true leader of -his people, a loyal son of the Church of England, a firm believer of the advantages of civilisation, and a staunch supporter of tho Government. His parting messages to his people were: ' Cling to the faith.' 'Weep not for mo, but weep for yourselves and for your children.'—Luke 23 and 28." .
