Christchurch, Tuesday. In a case under the Shops and Offices Act Mr. Bishop, S.M., was called on to decide whether a restarant could be dcemec* a. shop within the meaning of the Act. 6. 11. Fail, fishmonger and' refreshment-room-keeper, was charged with Laving worked throe females for more than 52 Lours in a week. 'The facts were admitted, and argument followed on; the law points. Counsel for the Labour Department stated that in some of (lie cases defendant had worked his employees up to 72 hours per week, which win much 'beyond what could be deemed reasonable. For the defence it was contended that the word shop ju section 4, sub-section (a), was merely used for the purpose of comprehension, and it was not expressly set out that the word was to include refreshment' rooms. Refreshment-room-keepers, like botelkeepers, were only brought within the meaning of the Act for the purpose of giving the statutory halfholiday to employees. The magistrate commented on the fact that a collective information had' been laid, and said he was not certain that separate informations were not necessary, -owl in future he would require separate informations. lit; reserved Lis decision till Tuesday. ucik
