DEATH OF A CANTERBURY SETTLER.
[BY I'KLEQRAPH. —OWW CORiiESf ONMNT.] OnaisTCHUECH, Tuesday. Oan'tbrbury lost one of its best type of settlers by the death, the other day, ut the age of 93, of Mr. John Lambie', sen., who came out from Ayrshire nearly 10 years ago. He bought about 200 acres of Government waste lands in the Ellesmere district, and converted the impassable swamp into one of the most- productive farms in Canterbury. Mr. Lambie, in his younger days, was a noted athlete and sportsman, and was also champion ploughman of his native parish, He had a wonderfully dear and retentive memory, ' which he retained to the last. He was four years of age when the battle ot Waterloa was fought, and had a clear recollection of seeing soldiers marching past en route for the ports ot embarkation, and of hearing the country gossip itl reference to Napoleon and the great battle with the French.
