Mr. John Gillies, the great cabbage plan! raiser, has issued his plant circular for the coining season. Mr. Gillies has upwards of 100 acres of cabbage plants, so that lie is in a position to meet all demands at very lowprices. As be grows all the principal seeds and stocks himself he continues to guarantee the stocks as first-class. As in resent years, Mr. Gillies' customers will have challenge cups and cash prizes of the value of £100, open to competition for exhibits of cabbages at the .Scottish National. Show. It seems from Mr. Gillies' price-list that 'Latos or Drumheads" arc this year priced «* 2s c * 1000, 13s per 10,000. or £6 5s per 100,000. The sale of His Majesty's Shorthorns recently came off in Windsor Park, proving very successful, there being a largo attendance of buyers, while very good prices were realised for the principal animals. As had generally been expected, the chief competition took place for the great show bull, Royal Duke, which was brought out in capital form. Bid- , ding opened at 200 guineas, and ho was quickly run up by tens, and then by twenties, until POO guineas was reached, when he was knocked down to Mr. F. Miller for exportation to the Argentine. Sir 0. Mosley was the chief home competitor. Fourteen other „ animals made three figure prices. In Japan the burdock is considered a valuable vegetable. The pigweed, the purslane, docks, and o'her plants we call weeds are eaten by some people. To remove, the odour of onions from the breath eat parsley and vinegar; from tho bands rub a piece of celery on them.
