The first shipment since April, 1900, of cattle from Argentina recently arrived at Deptford, having been diverted to that .port from, its original destination of Bilbao. One hundred and thirty-four animals were shipped at Buenos Ayres. One died on the voyage, and three cows calved on board, so that 136 animals were landed. They were- a very mixed lot, but the condition and quality of many were better than was looked for; and, on the whole, buyers competed freely for the first consignment, which, it is expected, will be followed by further arrivals in about a fortnight. It will bo interesting (says the Times) to watch the effect of this resuscitated trade upon the frozen beef export business of Argentina which ha 3 developed so rapidly within the last two or three years. The afforestation of about 50 acres of land in the Ogdon and .Mixenden district, England, by the Halifax Corporation is now completed. About 3000 young trees, larch, fir, etc., have been planted to the acre.
