NEWS FROM COUNTRY DISTRICTS.

[FROM ouh own correspondents.] •.;" \ KAUKAPAKAPA.

THE anniversary services in connection with the Wesleyan Church were held on Sunday last., There were good congregations both morning and evening. The Her. T. T. Thompson preached on both occasions. The mere fact being known that Miss Bimmer and Miss Maud Eiramer were to bo present, and were to sing, created ■ a special feature or attraction. Miss Rimmer had not sung in Kaukapakapa for some years, so that those who wore fortunate enough to listen to her enjoyed a real treat. . In "t connection with;'the above services a grand gift concert was held in the Public Hall on Monday evening. Captain Dawson occupied the chair. The hall was crowded. No better programme had been*put before a Kaukapakapa audience since that in aid of the late war fond, and I am pleased to state that the financial as well as the musical results were a complete success. This must be very satisfactory to Mr. and Mrs. Speer and the committee, i who have been ? energetically j at, work; for some time. \ The programme throughout was enthusiastically received. The following ladies and gentlemen took part in the same:—lnstrumental selection, two; violins, flute, and piano; song, ''White Wings," Mrs. W. H. Goodwin; piano • solo, "' Arlequine," Miss Savage; song, "The Song that the Angels Sing," Miss Maud Rimmer, with violin obligate by Miss i Bimmer; reading, ',' Our Cow," Mr. Savage (this created great merriment); song, '• Vashti," Miss Rimmer (this : was undoubtedly the gem of the evening, and was encored); dumb-bell display by schoolchildren, ; under .= direction * of Mrs. . Speer > (very good and encored); - song, " Tomorrow will be Friday," Miss Plorrie Donovan; piano solo, "The Victoria Gavotte," Miss Sinclair (received much applause); song, " Remember Me No More," Mrs. Speer; song, " The Toilers," Miss Maud Bimmer; <'song, "Why Must We Say Good-bye?" Mr. Smith;; song, "Child, of Nazareth." Miss Rimmer. " God Save the King" concluded the concert part. The sum of £14 3s, clear of all expenses, resulted from. ■:, the function, .*■- which must be considered very: satisfactory. The musical part was under the direction of Mr. Dye, who deserves credit for the able manner in which it was carried out.

ROTOEUA.

A PROMENADE concert was held in the Sanatorium Grounds on Wednesday last. Promenade concerts in R-otorua are luxuries not met with in other parts of New Zealand, or at least are beyond comparison with any such held elsewhere. The Sanatorium Grounds illuminated are. a sight ever to be remembered with' the greatest pleasure. To call the scene an animated fairyland does not do justice to it. Hundreds of Japanese lanterns line the white paths, while here and there the weird effect of a jet of steam is heightened by the blaze of electric light. There is good music from the local bands, and a well-arranged programme in which professional singers and visitors often take part. The following programme was contributed on Wednesday: — Overture, piano, Mr. Healey; song. Kentucky ißabe Mrs. Peace; song, Mr. Morganrecitation. Miss Petrie; song, " La Serenata," Mrs. Gillet; mouth-organ solo. " Dfolly Grav" Mr. McLeod; song, "He Was Despised " Mrs Bartley; duet. Mr. and Mrs. Gillet-' song "Flight Ages,- Miss Malfroy; recitation.' The Usual Way, Miss Petrie: song, " Goodbye," Mrs. Gillet; song, " Clorine." Mr. Morgan.
