The annual distribution of prizes took place yesterday afternoon, at " The Willows," Wyn-yard-street, there being a very, large gathering of the parents and friends of the pupils. One: classroom was devoted to the display of* the work, proving the industry of the pupils during the st year. J , : The exhibits taluded plain and fancy needlework, maps,s drawings paintings, and wood-carving, all , of which elicited much admiration from the visitors, the prizes were presented by. the Rev. W. E Gillam. vicar of St. Matthew's, who opened proceedings by heartily congratulating Mrs. ; Williams and her staff upon the success, not only of their ■ method °*' intellectual culture, but upon the excellence of their moral trainnig of the pupils under their charge. Mr. .Crillain said he was sure that the young people attending the school were being educated in the truest sense. The education was not of that mechanical character which moulded the children in one particular groove, and turned them out only with the acquisition of certain rudiments required by the State. < But the best .'parts of ;.; their nature were " reached, mental, moral, and spiritual. * The true object of education should be to cultivate tastes that would enrich the whole nature.; Surely that was the meaning of the word education.
