DISTRICT BELT COMPETITION AT THAMES.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES, Saturday. The quarterly competition for the District Championship Belt took place at the Parawai range to-day, when a goodly number of members of both the No. 1 Thames and Hauraki Rifles took part in the contest. The day was not altogether a favourable one for high scores, as the light was not only very changeable, but the wind was also puffy and somewhat treacherous. Notwithstanding these defects several good scores were made, the winner eventually turning up in .Sergeant George Clarke, of the Hauraki Rifles, who, however, only defeated Sergeant 11. Pearse, of No. 1 Rifles, by one point, the former putting up the excellent score of 85 points, and the latter 84. Lieutenant Lefevre, of the Hauraki Rifles, was third, with 83 points. On the last occasion the belt was competed for it was won by Sergeant Crosbie, of the No. 1 Thames Rifles, with a score of 81 points, so to-day's scoring shows a decided improvement. Sergeant Clarke's win is a most popular one. He is an old marksman, and this is the second time ho has won the belt on behalf of the Hauraki Rifles, and no other member of that corps has yet had the honour of winning it. Following are the highest scorers, the ranges being 500 yds and 600 yds, 10 shots at each: —
