PRIVATE SCHOOLS.

APPLICATIONS FOR EXEMPTION. The threatened prosecution of some parents whose children attend private schools for not sending the to a public school led the principals of several private schools to apply at yesterday's meeting of the Education Board for exemption under section 5 of the School Attendance Act. Certificates of exemption were granted to the following i — Parneli Orphan Home; " Melmerly," Parnell ; Grey Lynn College. Grey" Lynn; Miss Ward's Seventh Day Adventist school, Mackelvie-street, Grey Lynn; Miss Taylor's school, Birkenhead; Miss Jordan's school, View Road, Mount Eden; and St. Mac thew's day school. Mr. J. D. McKenzie raised the question of the examination of pupils attending private, schools by the Board's inspectors. The Chairman (Mr. Bagnall) did not think the Board should do it. tie quite agre ;_l that the schools should be examined, but considered that the Education Department should undertake the work. Mr. McKenzie suggested that the private schools might be asked if they would agree to contribute towards the cost of the examination. * Mr. Bagnall said they had asked the Roman Catholics and they had declined. He pointed out that if the Board undertook the examination of the private schools it would mean a large expense. Mr. J. iVluir was of opinion that the time was coming when all these schools would be inspected by Government inspectors, and there would be grants to all denominational schools. It was coming as surely as day followed the night. The matter then dropped.
