MEETING OF MOUNT ALBERT RATEPAYERS.

A lahgixy-attended meeting of ratepayers in the Mount Albert district was held on Wednesday evening in tho Morningside schoolroom, to consider the several schemes - for water supply, drainage, road works, and other general work in the district, and to ' determine as to whether the Board should proceed .to raise a loan for the purpose of carrying out the works. Mr. J. A. 80-uskill was in the chair, and outlined the proposals submitted for a, water supply to serve the whole district, at an estimated cost of - £13,755. He stated that drainage would cost £7000," which included the Glenmore Estate (£2000), the ■ Kingsland paddocks (£3000), and the Board's proportion towards "V the main Archhill gully (£2000). The esti- , mated cost of putting the main road in order,; i and forming it to its full width, and renewing the footpaths on both sides of the road - from Eden Terrace to the Avondale boundary was £3000. The stone-Breaker would ■ cost £450, and the steam road roller £650. Re- '* garding the Kingsland crossing railway bridge, the Board's proportion would be £300. The first year's interest on the loan, £1321, and the total amount required would be about £26,476. The interest and sinking fund to meet the charges on the loan would be £1258, involving a rate of l£d in the £~ The water supply would ho self-supporting, and special rates for the other objects should Jibe raised, say, to the extent of three-eighths of a penny in the £. The chairman added that he would leave the matter to the deci- , sion of tho ratepayers. , Several questions were asked by the ratepayers, and the neces- : sary particulars supplied by Mr. J. V. KerrTaylor. The clerk then read Mr. Metcalfe's • report on the water supply scheme, and after further discussion it was moved and seconded that the Board be instructed to , take a poll on the question of water supply. An amendment was moved by Mr. Walters, "That in the opinion of the meeting tho time had not yet arrived for the district to ■ * undertake such an extensive scheme," but was\ *;■ lost, only six supporting it. The motion .was then carried by a large majority. . Discussion followed on the other subjects, and the following resolutions were unanimously carried :—" That a poll be taken on the question of draining the Glenmore Estate - - and Kingsland paddocks." . "That the rate for drainage works .be struck over the whole V. district." "That a poll be taken on the question of the formation of the main road." V H " That the proposal re the crusher and roller , be not entertained at present." "That the Kingsland railway crossing question be, placed on the list for submission to the ratepayers."
