AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOARD.
A meeting of the Auckland College and Grammar School Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present:—Mr. Brown (chairman), Messrs. A. Kidd, R. Fan-ell, S. Luke, Professor Thomas, and Dr. Roberton. New Member: Mr. Luke welcomed Mr. A. Kidd to his seat as a new member of the Board ex officio as Mayor. Mi. Kidd briefly returned thanks. Tenders: The tender of Dr. Laing, as advertised, to lea.se the property occupied by fcim at Devonport at £80 a year for 10 years, was accepted. In addition to the rent the lessee to pay all taxes and local charges and insurance. It was decided tc call for tenders for clearing and ploughing the Board's endowment in Ayr-street, Parnell. Finance : Accounts to the amount of £95? 4s 8d were passed lor payment, which included the sum of £300 towards the cost of new buildings. Use of Room: Colonel White wrote ask- 1 ing permission to use a room at the Grammar School on the 4th prox. in order to hold therein the quarterly examination of volunteer officers. The request was granted. Fairfax Road : Mr. C. Z. Clayton wrote forwarding plans fo: approval for a building in Fairfax Road, Epsom, on one of the Board's leases assigned by him to Mrs. Miriam Dawson, and asking for an extension of time {or building purposes. The assignment was approved of, and the plans submitted to the Board's architect. Science Master: The .Agent-General lor the colony wrote informing the Board that the Selecting Commissioners had selected , ■Mr. John Henry Howell, at present holding the position of science master at the County School, Aberystwyth, to fill the position of science master at the Auckland < Jollege and Grammar School. It was further stated that Mr. Howell had furnished c satisfactory medical health certificate, and would leave for the colony about, the month of August. Particulars of Mr. Howell's testimonials set out that he is a married man, 31 years of age,, with no family, and at present employed as science master at the County School, Aberystwyth, preparing pupils for London and Welsh matriculation. His experience was stated as gained at Craigmoro College, Clifton; Strand School, King's College, London and the County School, Aberystwvth. His academic career was stated as follows : — Two years at University College. Aberystwyth ; University College, Loaidon, three years ; University of Strassburg, one ses- ? sion. He gained an open scholarship at the University College, Aberystwyth, in 1889, and was placed in the first division at each of the London University examinations at the first time of sitting, and at the B.Sc. examination obtained first-class honours ict physics. Resignation : Mr. R. Farrell tendered his resignation as a member of the Board. The Chairman expressed regret at its receipt.Mr. Farrell said he was elected to the Board in April last by the Board of Education in place of Mr. Justicc Cooper, who resigned, and as he (Mr. Farrell) had not been reelected a member of the Board of Education at the recent election, he telt it his duty to resign under the circumstances. The Chairman pointed out that under the Act Mr. Farrell could complete his term, and asked him to withdraw his resignation, which Mr. Farrell agreed to do.
