RATING ON UNIMPROVED VALUES.

! The poll of ratepayers on the question of j rating on unimproved values in ; the city | falls to be held 'on August 6. Yesterday i morning a deputation waited on the Mayor (Dr. Campbell) and requested him to call a meeting in connection with the question. The deputation consisted of: Messrs. F. G. Ewington, S. Vaile, Dr.. Wallis, W. Spragg, P. E. Cheal, T. Webb and F. M. King. His Worship heartily agreed to call the meeting for Wednesday next m j St. James' Hall. Speakers will be selected to represent both sides of the question, statements showing the difference in the incidence of rating under the proposed system as compared with the present system were circulated yesterday. At the City Council meeting last night Mr. Court pointed out he had received notices which were altogether incorrect, one making the absurd statement that the rates on one Queen-street propcrtv would be raised under the new system "from £35 to £138. He had also received notices concerning properties with which he had nothing to do. Mr. Parr said the Government values were entirely unreliable, and if ratepayers were taking that as the basis thoy were taking a leap in the dark. .■■,-■. : _'
