ACCIDENT TO THE ROTOMAHANA.
A BROKEN SHAFT. [BY TELEGRAM!.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] 'Thames, Wednesday. Tfik Northern Sieuivwhip Com.p-i steamer Rotomahana had the misfortune 10 bre<?k her crank shaft last night. whilst proceeding from Auckland to Coromand '. The accident happened when the steamer was about halt-way across the gulf from Waiheke to Coromandel, and as there was a stiff wind blowing. Captain Gibbous at once put up canvas and made for the Thames, anchoring off Tararn about four o'clock this morning. At a later hour the Wakatere went down to her assistance and towed her to a position off the Goods Wharf, after which the Wakatere took on board the Rotomahana's passengers and left for Auckland, via Coromandel. Messrs. Price Bros, are now proceeding with the necessary repairs to the Rotomahana's broken shaft, and it is anticipated the steamer will be able to take tip her usual running in a day or two. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN* CORRESPONDENT.] Coromandel, Wednesday. The passengers of the s.s. Rotomahana arrived here by the p.s. Wakatere at noon to-day. Before leaving the steamer, Mr. A. S. Ford, on behalf of the passengers, (about 70) interviewed Captain Farquhar, and requested him to convev to Captain Gibbons, his officers., stewards, and crew, their appreciation of their kindness and attention during a trying time last night, when the Rotomahana was at the mercy of the fierce gale which was raging in the Hauraki Gulf when her shaft broke, and especially to Captain Gibbons for the able wav in which he handled the steamer and brought her into port safely.
