CONSTABLE ATTACKED BY A PRISONER.
[by telegram,—tress association.] Wellington, Friday. Constable Cassis, in company with a wardor, was passing Mount Cook prison yard this morning, when a penal servitude prisoner named Fogan rushed out and dealt him a blow with a shovel, inflicting severe injuries. _ Fogan was brought before the Court this afternoon, but Cass in was unable to give evidence. It appears lie had been called in by the warders to take charge of some tobacco and a letter, found planted near tho gaol, which, it is suspected, were n-eont for Fogan. The latter is serving sentences of nine years for burglary ana prison-breaking.
