The Magistrate to-day convicted Alfred Crossey, late publican, who became a bankrupt, on a charge of not keeping proper books, and remanded him until Friday next for the report of the probation officer. H. A. Bender, boat-builder, was to-day fined £5 and costs foi taking a launch over to Port Underwood on a fishing excursion without holding the necessary certificate. The export of sheep to the South Island is, if anything, increasing. Nearly every day mobs of 600 or so are driven through the streets of the city down to the wharves. Ashbukton, Friday. Mr. J. S. Tennant, of the High-street School, Dunedin, was appointed headmaster of the Ashburton High School today. There were 23 applicants. Napier, Friday. Joseph O'Connell, police constable, was to-day charged with stealing £8, the property of Samuel Beswick. Prosecutor alleged that the money was taken on the voyage of the Waihora from Gisborae to papier, when accused was on board in charge of two prisoners. After hearing part of the evidence, accused was remanded till nest Thursday.
