BRITISH RESIDENT AT RAROTONGA.

[BT TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]

_ Wellington, Saturday. It is stated that Major dudgeon has been appointed British Resident at Rarotonga, in succession to Mr. F. J. Moss. The appointment is subject to the approval of the British Government, but it is not anticipated that there will be any objection. Major Gudgeon is unquestionably well qualified for the position. He was a Judge of the Native Lands Court, he is a good Maori linguist, and has given special attention to the island dialects of the Maori language. He has also been Commissioner of Police and Under-Secretary for Defence. So far as I can hear, no attempt will be made to change the nature of the position, or to vary the powers of the British Resident.
