FIRE AT THE THAMES.
[by telegraph.— correspondent.] Tiiahes, Sunday. A six-roomed cottage, situated in Karaka Road, and owned by Mr. Alex. Campbell, a well-known prospector, was completely destroyed by fire shortly after four o'clock' this afternoon. At the time the fire broke out Mr. and Mrs. Campbell were away from home, and there was no one in the house. A little girl first discovered the outbreak, which look place near the chimney in the diningroom. She quickly gave the alarm, and had there been a few buckets of water available the (lames would have quickly been quenched, but, unfortunately, the house stood some distance back from the principal water-mains, and before the fire brigade could get a lead of hose into working order the whole building was in flames. Attention had in consequence to be first directed to saying the adjoining cottages, which had a very narrow escape. The most of Mr. Campbell's furniture was saved, but a great deal of it was damaged. It is believed that the property was insured, but no definite information can be obtained on this point, owing to Mr. and Mrs. Campbell's absence from home.
