By comparison with 1893, the production of gold in 1891 increased, it will be seen, by £4,534,000, the share of South Africa in this increase being £2,265,000; that of Australia, £1,214,000; that of the United States, £709,0.00 and that of Mexico, £639,000; while the contribution of Russia to tho total decreased by £735,000. In 1893 the United States held the first place among the goldproducing oountrlea, bat they were passed in 1894 by South Africa and Australia.
