AUCKLAND STOCK AND SHARE BROKERS' REPORT.-Thursday, Dec. 26, 1895.

We have to report a fluctuating market in mining shares since last mail, but during the last week or 80 a much healthier tone hag pervaded, and probably thin was caused by investors taking advantage of this dull market to buy, as there is a very general impression that there will be an upward tendency after the holidays. The last floatation of importance, viz., the Kauri Mining Corporation, will give an additional stimulus to prospecting. We hope to see a large increase in the output of gold from our mines this coning yew, owing to the additional crushing power. In the investing stocks, Gas and Insurance shares have shown a doomed advance. National Bank shares have also been freely dealt with at quotations.

We have to acknowledge the receipt of a ] copy of the eighteenth annual report of the Australasian Club of Edinburgh for 1894-95. It states that the club has uow been in existence for a period of 21 years, and that it originated by a few Australasians thon resident in Edinburgh organising social gatherings in their o.vn rooms. During the year twenty new members have been elected. There were four resignations, and two members were deleted for non-payment) of subscription. There are now 121 members, including 43 life mem' bers. It is no art tole rich when one has money, and it is no merit to be poor when one has none, but a Waterbury Watch is within the reach of all, both rich and poor, and no better timekeeper can be bought. The wonderful new and improved watch, " The Trump," caa now be obtained everywhere,

Tho Government have offered a bonus of £1750 for the encouragement of the New Zealand flax industry undor certain conditions. A machine or process is wanted for ! dressing New Zealand flax or hemp (I'hormium tenax) which shall be on improvement on the machines or processes now in uao, and which shall, after trial, be found to materially reduce the cost of production, improve the product, or increase the quality of dressed fibre. All applications for the bonus have to be sent addressed to the Hon. the Minister for Agriculture, Wellington, and must reach him not later than the 31st March, 1897. Full information as to tho character of the machine must be given, mode of working, cost, and tho cost at which the fibre can be produced. If within the colony, the 1 Govornment will bear the cost of removal 1 and trial, etc. A bonus is also offered for 1 a process of utilising tbe products of the hemp.

During the paso four years the Union Steamship Company contributed in round numbers £2076 to the funds of its Mutual Benefit Society, while members' contributions havo amounted to £8923. Tho expenditure in sick pay during the period amounted to £3136, in medical attendance to £2273, in medicine to £5-10, and on funeral claims to £518.

Some of the young nativo men about Taurangn, aro returning to one of tho customs of thoir ancestors, inasmuch that they are having two homes and wives, one nt Tauranga and tho other somewhere else. This is not looked upon as the correct thing by the natives of the presont day, and a koriro is to be held about the matter.
