Wellington, January Captain Shaw of the steamer Star of Victoria, which recently arrived from Sydney, via Auckland, reports that the vessel left Sydney foi Auckland on the 2nd of January, and en countered strong easterly winds and head seas to the New Zealand coast. The wine then moderated, and went to the north-east accompanied by very thick weather and fogs but as the vessel came to the south-east the weather seemed to clear, land! being sightec on the starboard bow. Captain Shaw wai under the impression that it was the main land, but it has since provtiii to have beei the Great Barrier. As Captain Shaw wai unable to pick up Tiritiri, he decided t< stand out to sea, and when able to dis tinguish Cuvier Island light took a fresl departure, which enabled him to verify his position, and shape a correc course. It should be stated that Cap tain Shaw after sighting the New Zealani coast kept on a course similar to that foi lowed on previous occasions when comin, from Sydney. He gives as a reason for beinj nearly 30 miles to the eastward out of th track that it is possible he may have kept th steamer a little further out than usual and ; strong current running through the Haurak Gulf must have caught her on the Btarboar<

Napier, January 16.—The- Shaw, Sa*ill, and Albion Company ship Margaret Galbraith, Captain John Collingwood, arrived from London to-day, alter a lengthy passage of 123 days. She sailed on September 14, and did not pass the equator until 44 days out. When in lat. 44 S., long. 25 E. she met with a large number of icebergs, and was hore-to, being embayed in the ice for six days. THE TONGARIRO. London, January 14.The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tongariro left Plymouth on Saturday tor Wellington and Lyttelton, with 2650 tons cargo and 67 passengers.
