AUCKLAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
•< < ♦ ANNUAL COMPETITION, The twenty-second annual meeting of the Auckland Rifle Association was concluded at the Mount Eden Range, on Boxing-day. There was a considerable decrease in the number of entries as compared with the previous year, the Auckland Navals, Engineers, and Victorias being unrepresented; while there was only one each from Whangarei and the Thames; both of them, however, were prize winners. The firingcommenced on Saturday last when the Nursery and Teams matches were disposed of. In the former Lieutenant Watson proved the winner with the good score of 39. This is a very creditable performance considering it' was fired at one of the most difficult ranges, viz., 300 yards, and with the Snider. The teams match was won by the " A " Battery Ist Team with a score of 177, the City Rifles Ist team being second with 171, and fhe "A " Battery 2nd team third with 166. On Tuesday Beck's was won by Sergeant Parslow (" A" Battery), and as this was the third occasion he had won it became his own property. This trophy has been competed for annually for about 20 years. Taylor and Parslow of the" A" Battery, and Fairs, of the Victoria?, had each two previous wins to their credit, but neither Taylor nor Fairs were competitors this year. The " Citizens" was won by Mr. Nutt, one of Auckland's most consistent shots, and for some years a member of the late Newton Rifles, now known as the City Rifles. Hatswell, of the " A" Battery, tied Nutt, but was counted out, as Nutt made the highest score at the longest range. The " Officers" was won by a very promising young shot Gunner Dobbs, of the "A" Battery. He is a new arrival in Auckland, but brings a good record with him, and will doubtless be oftea heard of in our future local competitions. On counting: the scores to determine the best aggregates it was found that Nutt and Tobiti had tied at 177 each. This necessitated the tie being shot off by firing five rounds each at 600 yards. The result was that Nutt having scored 15 against Tobin's 14, became the winner of the first money prize, the Star Cup and Association medal. Tobin taking the second money prize and the Herald Cup. Last year Henderson (" A " Battery) succeeded in securing the Star Cup, having won it two years in sue cession. *
It must be very gratifying to the pro- ! prietors of the Colonial Ammunition Manui facturing Company to find their ammunition ' is equal to that of any other maker, as the 1 shooting on Boxing Day proves ; for Nutt, j who used their ammunition throughout, was second in Beck's Cup, first in the [ Citizens, and first in the Aggregate. The ' proprietors have presented the Association | with 500 of Snider ammunition, which will ' probably be offered as a prize for a team's match to be competed for some time during next month. A great deal of the success of the meeting is due to Captain Robertson, of the City Rifles, who kindly volunteered to superintend and conduct the shooting, and it is almost needless to say gave every satisfaction.
