WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.
[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Hamilton, Tuesday. At the meeting of the Waipa County Council to-day there were present: Messrs. Kusabs, Shepherd, Exelby, Smith, and Teasdale. Mr. Teasdale was voted to the chair. The Engineer reported that owing to harvest operations little work had been done on contracts. In the Tuhikaramea district the contracts were being proceeded with, but lie had not let the one on the Kihikihi-Cam-bridge Road. He had, in company with Mr. Shepherd, inspected the side drains on the Hamilton - Whatawhata swamp road, and thought these could be cleaned out for a cost of about £12. He recommended that a box" culvert, costing about £9, should be used to replace the bridge near the Frankton station, injured by a traction engine last spring. The report was adopted. Mr. Shepherd spoke as to the necessity of clearing the side drains on the Whata-whata-Hamilton Road at once. If left over it would cost much more. Ho proposed that the work be at once, undertaken. Air. Exelby seconded the offer of Air. Mawhinny to do the work for £11 ss, which was accepted. On the motion of Mr. Exelby, seconded by Mr. Shepherd, it was resolved that the two bridgeson the Frankton Road be replaced, and a culvert bo built in place of the bridge near Dinsdalc's. It was resolved to call for tenders on the Cambridge swamp road. A letter was read from Mr. Hibbs, asking the Council to gravel the road past his place on the Hamil-toii-Ohauno road for a distance of about three miles. On the motion of Messrs. Smith and Ivusabs, the engineer was instructed to examine the road and report to next meeting. Slaughterhouse licenses were granted to Messrs. Graves, Elmsly, and Gibson, of Ngaraiwahia, Kihikihi, and Te Awamutu. The old timber at Campbell's Gully bridges was sold to Mr. MeCallnm for 13s. A petition of the ratepayers of the Newcastle Riding was received, asking that the WhatawluitaNgaruawhahia road be at once repaired, being now in some places, as at Stones' corner, in a dangerous condition. The petition reflected on the engineer's manner of doing the work in their district by day labour instead of by contract. Several members spoke reprovingly of the petitioners in dictating how works should be done. Mr. Smith condemned the tone of the petition, and at the instance of Mr. Shepherd, withdrew a motion not to undertake the work. The Chairman moved, and Mr, Kusabs seconded, That the clerk be instructed to write to the petitioners, stating that the Council had every confidence in their engineer, and on the motion of Mr. Shepherd the engineer was instructed to inspect the road, and report to next meeting. Tenders were ordered to be called for gravelling a "portion of the Alexandm-Ohaupo Road near the Alexandra bridge. It was proposed and seconded that the county clerk be the returning ollicer for the election of licensing committee, and taking the local option poll. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. Farrell.
