WHAKATANE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held on Monday afternoon. The members present were :— Messrs. S. Bates, E. Chapman, H. R. Hogg, S. Moody, Arthur Parkinson, and Dr. Reid. In the absence of Mr. Boekett, County Chairman, Dr. Reid was voted to the chair. The minutes of last meeting and outgoing correspondence were read and approved. Mr. Boekett wrote apologising for his absence. A slaughter license was granted to Mr. R. O. Stewart, Whakatane. Road Works.—Mr. Crapp; engineer, submitted a scheme which was approved, of expenditure of deferred payment thirds, and reported on work done oil the Waiotahi Road, and that the portion across the Kuhumoa Swamps requires raising aud drains opening, also that planking of the Waioeka Bridge is in need of repair. It was agreed to have estimates prepared for the swamp work. Correspondence was read from Government re the grant for the Orini Bridges at Whakatane, authorizing the Council to accept the tender of £285, and agreeing to pay 5 per cent, for supervision. The .above tender of Brown and Moody, contractors, of Whakatane, was accepted. The repairs to these bridges and their widening to admit of light wheeled traffic will be the completion of one very important link in the overland journey between Opotiki and Taurauga. Government Grant. — A letter was received from the Government authorising the expenditure of the grant of £150 for the Ohope portion of the main road. When this piece of road is finished the present very steep track over the Oiiope hills, near Whakatane, will be avoided, and the, only serious pinch, except the sandhills, for light vehicles between Opotiki and Whakatane done away with. Compensation.— The Government wrote replying to a letter from the Council on the subject of compensation to Mr. McCarthy for the road line taken through his land. He claimed about £200 compensation, to pay for fencing and some 14 acres of land taken. Government pointed out tliat the road was originally made on the condition that the Road Board settled all claims for compensation. Mr. Bates moved, and Mr. Chapman seconded, " That the matter be held over for a future occasion, or till the county decided on what was to be the main county road between Opotiki and Whakatane." The motion was carried m. con.

Licensing Elections.—The Treasury sent a circular asking that the licensing elections be not neglected. Chances of Ownership.—The Property Tax Department forwarded a list of transactions in lawn lands in the county be tweeii 3ist March, 1SS!), and 30th November--1800. .

Road-ma —With regard to the Ohope portion of the main road, it was agreed to expend the grant by making a dray road as far as the Government grant will admit I'oroporo-Te Teko Road : It was agreed to ask Government if the grant for repairs to this road may be expended. Dot: Registration.—Mr. Hogg asked that his motion in this matter be allowed to stand over till next meeting. Agreed to. Accounts. —The treasurer laid on the table a statement of accounts showing a credit balance of £45 lis sd. Small accounts, amounting to £1 10s, were passed for payment.

fin-: i'rur.tc Pound.—Mr. Parkinson reported that the pound was carried 011 at a loss, and that the sub-connnittee had offered the poundkeeper the fees of the pound up to £'24 a year, subject to his books being' inspected. This arrangement .was agreed to, the poundkeeper to sign an agreement. OvKitniJH Baths.—lie land against which judgment for rates has been obtained, the clerk was authorised to proceed towards the sale of land which was thought saleable, and also to sue defaulting ratepayers at discretion. Making a Hath. —Resolved on the suggestion of Mr. Hogg that the matter of striking a rate be held over till the new financial year commences.

Tiik Kuiikmoa Swamp.—Mr. Frank Chapman interviewed the Council 011 behalf of the Opotiici Road Hoard, and submitted plans of a road across the Kuhumoa Swamp, from Huntress Creek Hill to I'airata. thus avoiding the sandhills, and the fording of Huntress Creek. He asked that the road be taken over by the Council. The matter having been fully discussed, Mr. 10. Chapman moved that the engineer's opinion b.*.,taken as to the feasibility of the proposed road, having regard to its continuation an a county road. The motion was not seconded. Mr. Hogg moved that the matter lie held over till a rate is struck. Seconded by Mr. Parkinson, and carried. In reply to the deputation, the Chairman stated that the Road Hoard might he assured of the Council's support in the matter. Timk of Mketin<!.— The hour of meeting was altered from two p.m. to ten a.m. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.—[Own Correspondent.J
