MR. FISHER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
o [by telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Monday. At a banquet givon to tho members of the Educational Institute, Mr. Fisher, as an ardont supporter of . technical education, referred to what he stated was a curious misconception of his attitude in regard to that branch of education, into which Mr. Rolleston had fallen. In his speech at the breaking-up of tho Timaru High School, Mr. Rolleston laid great stress upon the following paragraph in tho last report issued by the Education Department:— " The correspondence initiated in February 1887, in the hope of engaging the interest of the colleges in a scheme for promoting tho study of technical art and science, has been temporarily suspended on account of the indication of the probable expense to the Department." Regarding this as a backward step, Mr. Rolleston had spoken of it in terms of condemnation. But he also went on to say that the present Government was very much to blame for having taken such a step. This was the error to which he referred. The correspondence on the subject was suspended by tho Department upon the direction of Sir R. Stout, then Minister of Education, who, in a departmental minute on the subject, had directed that nothing further should be done. The report of tho Educational Department from which Mr. Rolleston quoted is a report upon the progress and condition of public education in New Zealand during the year ending December 31st, 1887. Sir Robert Stout's minute was dated May 31, 1887.
