Bnckland and Sons offered several horses by auction, on Saturday last, in the bankrupt estate of E. Kelly. Paddy (on whom it was stated, £2f> was owing to the Auckland Racing Club) was purchased by Mr. E. W. Alison at £43 10s, and the same gentleman took the brood mare, Mystery, at £20 ; while Octopus went to Mr. Willis, of Otahuhu, at £15. About a year ago Senator Palmer (says an American paper) despatched Mr. Ebev W. Cottrell to Asia to purchase a number of fine Arabian horses for his celebrated stock farm. The Senator already has the most complete of the kind in the State of Michigan, and wanted to complete his magnificent collection by adding to it some of the equines read of but seldom seen. Mr. Cottrell returned recently, bringing with him a number of fine blooded horses, but objection by the Sultan prevented him from fetching back only one Arabian. When he readied the other side he learned that in anticipation of a European war the Sultan had prohibited the exportation of any more stock. He telegraphed to the American Consul at Constantinople to consult with the American Minister and the Sultan for a special firman, and then he went ahead with his investigations into Arabian horse matters. The attempt was rather venturesome in view of the pending troubles. Finally a special firman from tho Sultan for just two horses arrived, but Mr. Cottrell had only found one in all the country that could, bo purchased that was worth doing so. He says that the Arabian steed of literature exists in infinitely small proportions, and theso are harder to buy than tho favourite wives of the rich sheiks who own them.
