THE CHINESE QUESTION.
PROPOSED CONFERENCE; '. MORE MONGOLIANS FOR NEW 1 , ZEALAND. •'..-.- ACTION OF THE GOVERNMENT. , [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] > Melbourne, May 28. Arrangements are now nearly completed, for holding a Chinese Conference about the middle of June, the general feeling of the several Governments being in favour of the Conference meeting in Sydney. The actual date of the meeting has not yet been definitely fixed, as it is npt known when the New Zealand delegate will arrive. Sydney, May 28. The steamer Changsha, from China, has a number of Chinese passengers for New Zealand. Three are booked to Lyttelton, forty-three to Greymouth, five to Dunedin, and nine to Wellington. Wellington, Monday. The Government have received a cable message from Sydney to the effect that the steamer Changsha has arrived there with 60 Chinamen aboard, bound for New Zealand ports, and requesting from tho Government permission for the Union Company to send the Celestials on by the Wakatipu. The application runs counter to the understanding arrived at between the Government and the Union Company, that provided they were allowed to get rid of the Te Anau's shipment of 78 Chinese by placing them on the Wareatea (which was only entitled by marine law to carry four such passengers) they would bring no more Chinese from Australian to New Zealand ports. The matter is under the consideration of the Government. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. I understand that the Government have declined to allow the second batch of Chinese now in Sydney, and en route for New Zealand, to come on. They hold thai} the agreement with the Union Company, that they should carry no more Chinese down on their vessels, is binding, and must ! be enforced.
