- THE RABBIT PEST.

Sydney, May 28. The Rabbit Commission have reached Silverton, where experiments have been made with the disease discovered by Drs. Butcher and Ellis. The Commission were greatly impressed with the effectiveness of the disease as a rabbit-destroying agent.

THE COLLISION BETWEEN THE GARONNE AND LUCINDA Albany, May 28. Particulars to hand by the mail steamer of the collision between the Garonne and Lucinda, showed that the Garonne sighted the Lucinda 10 minutes before the collision took place, the green light showing to the green. The Garonne repeatedly signalled the Lucinda to port her helm, but no notice was taken of the warning, and apparently no watch was kept on board the Lucinda. The Garonne struck th* Lucinda amidships. Twenty of the Lucinda's crew clambered aboard the Garonne. One man was killed by the collision; another man, a cripple, refused to leave the Lucinda, because he was unable to swim, and went down with the vessel, which sank in toff minutes. TWO MEN DROWNED. Cooktown, May 28. ' Two men named Gevietsky and Mon*teith were drowned in the harbour today through the upsetting of a boat in a squall. THE MAROTOTO BROKEN HILLS. Sydney, May 28. At a meeting of the Marototo Broken Hills Mining Company to-day, the syndicate declined to accept any recoupment for their outlay. The money will be returned to the shareholders tomorrow. THE OUTRAGE IN A POLICE CELL. Sydney, May 28 : The prisoner who was horribly injured by another in a polico cell in this city is recovering. • HORSES FOR INDIA. Melbourne, May 28. : The Government have received intimation from the Indian Government that 950 horses are required for the army in India at an average price of £53, that sum to include the cost of delivery in India. THE QUEENSLAND ELECTIONS. Brisbane, May 28. The elections are completed, and the Opposition have a majority of 18. The Government will not resign until after the meeting of Parliament on 12tb June.
