ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE.

Late on Friday night a robbery was committed, with considerable violence, upon a man named Henry Cuthbert, in Aber-crombie-street. He states that he was proceeding down the street, between eleven and twelve o'clock, being on his way home to Swanson-streat, and had passed two men who were standing at the corner of Symondsstreet, opposite the Wynyard Arms Hotel. They followed him down for a short distance, and then one of them, whom he identified as Frederick Ellis, caught him by the throat, and threw him down on the road, while the other man rifled his pockets of 18s. Cuthbort, who is an elderly man, and a gardener by trade, states that he was considerably knocked about and assaulted by the men, who, on gaining possession of the money, made off down a passage. The robbery was reported to the police, and two hours later Frederick Ellis and a man named William, alias Larry, Small were arrested by Sergeant McMahon and Constables Kelso and Russell. The accused were brought up at the Police Court on Saturday, before Mr. H. G. Seth Smith, R.M., on the charge of robbery from the person, and remanded for a week, upon the application of Sergeant Pratt. Subsequently a man named James Smith was apprehended in connection with the same charge.
