THE ENGLISH ELECTIONS.
THE COMPLETE RETURNS; PROSPECTS OF A COALITION. | reuter's telegrams] London, July 17. The whole of the elections are now completed. They have resulted in the return of 316 Conservatives, 78 Unionists, 191 Gladstonites, 85 Parnellites. A petition has been lodged against the return of Mr. Alex. McArthur, for the Buckrose division of Yorkshire. Sir Evelyn Ashley, who was UnderSecretary for the Colonies in the previous Gladstone Administration, has been defeated. It is expected that the Ministry will tender their resignation immediately, but it is considered unlikely that a coalition will be effected between the Conservatives and Unionists. Lord Granville has announced his intention of retiring into private life. LORD HARTINGTON AND MR GLADSTONE. [press association.] London, July 17. The Marquis of Hartington has declined to accept Mr. Gladstone's suggested modification of the Home Rule proposals. MR. GLADSTONE'S VIEWS. London, July 17. . Mr. Gladstone's letter to the Press indicates a tendency to a repeal of the Union, and to the abolition of the House of Lords. Mr. Gold win Smith asks whether such a man, in the frame of mind that Mr. Gladstone is, is fit to deal with Ireland. The Times denounces Mr. Gladstone's travesties of history as baseless, and the charges made by him against his opponents as unfair. It also considers that he attacks many of his old friends. Many of the English journals follow in the same strain, and say that the vulgarity of his epithets is turning his defeat into personal humiliation.
