♦ [by TELEGRAPH. — OWN correspondent] Wellington, Friday. T:ik member for Akaroa, Mr. Montgomery, was a passenger this evening by tho Rotorua for Auckland, to meet the mail steamer Tongariro, in which he is to proceed to England. Mr. Montgomery will return to the colony in time to attend the next meeting of the General Assembly. Some time since the department purchased a small steamer for harbour purposes from the Union S.S. Co., which had to bo put together by Mr. Robertson, of the Phoenix Foundry here. She will be launched tomorrow evening. She will be named after Mrs. Ballance, who is to christen the vessel, There has been some slight agitation here against bringing tUe C. L). Aot into force in Wellington ; lectures were giveu to prevent its adoption. Notwithstanding this opposition the medical profession have agreed to a resolution recommending that it be brought into force. Messrs. Stewart and Bcere, engineers of the Rotorua railway line, were passengers to Auckland by tho Rotorua this afternoon. Mr. Knorpp, the Government Engineer, was also a passenger. He goes up to inspect the preliminary work. The line is to be completed within two years and a half.
