ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the meeting on Monday evening there were present : The Mayor, Messrs. Mark, Hill, Robinson, Tapp, Sullivan, Sheldrick, Yates. The minutes were read and confirmed.
Streets Committee.—The Streets Committee reported that they had accepted the tender of Mr. W. Brierly for the supply of scoria ash metal from the Three Kings at one shilling and sevenpence halfpenny per yard; that to make the footpath on the east side of Queen-street from Princes-street to the wharf, would bo too expensive a work to be undertaken at present; that the Engineer be instructed to lay off the line of Queen street from Mr. Sheldriok'e property to the wharf.
Corbbspoxdkxce.—From the Minister of Lands, in answer to the petition re One-tree Hill Cemetery Reserve, stating that a Bill was being brought into Parliament to change the purpose of the reserve to a recreation ground. The petition sent by the Council set out the difficulty the Council was labouring under in being obliged to provide cemetery accommodation without any fund for that purpose, and making application to the Government for a piece ot land for the purpose or a money grant to assist in the purchase of a suitable piece. From the Treasury, covering £100, a portion of the Government contribution towards the maintenance of the main road : The Clerk was instructed to make application for £200, due for the ensuing year for the same purpose. From the Onehunga Racing Club, asking permission to erect a wicket gate leading into the recreation reserve : Granted. From Mr. Morao, offering fourteen acres of land for a cemetery for £1050, one third cash, the balance to remain, if desired, upon mortgage at 7 per cent : Consideration deferred until the Council wore in a position to act. —From the Engineers (Mesirs. Boylan and Lundon) stating that Messrs. Keehan and Brierly, the contractors for work in Queen and Salwyn Streets, had not completed their contract according to specification, requesting the Council to cancel the contract : The Clerk was instructed to request the Engineers to furnish the contractors with particulars of what still required to be done to complete the works, and the cancellation of the contract was deferred for a fortnight. From Messrs. Keehan and Briorly, complaining of the action of the Engineers, and stating their willingness to complete the work under proper supervision. From the Solicitor, requesting authority to appear in Court for the Council if necessary : Authority given. From Mount Roskill Road Board, enclosing an account for £5 3s 2d, an amount expended in ropairing the boundary road, and asking the Council to pay half : Payment ordered.
•Accounts.—'lho credit balance was stated to be £459 6s ud, with liabilities under contract £308 Is 9d. Accounts amounting to £119 18a lid were passed for payment.
Power of the Streets Committee.— A long discussion took place on a motion bj Mr. Robinson, " That the Streets Committee have more power," which lasted till past eleven o'clock, and ended by the withdrawal of the motion.[Own Correspondent, August 25.]
