GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
The monthly. meeting of the Grammar Sohool Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Judge Fenton (in the chair), Hod. Colonel Haul tain, and Messrs. J. H. Upton and J. M. Clark. An apology for absence waß received from His Worship the Mayor. Leases.—lt was resolved that the question of letting the allotments in aril-street, Havelock-street, aud Noto North Road, be remitted to Colonel Haultain and Mr. Fenton, acting as a committee, with power to act and to report on the condition of the properties at the corner of Havelock and Symonds Streets. Free Tuition.—lt was resolved that free tuition be given to the sons of the Secretary and Janitor.
Chigket Wicket I .—Sanction was given for payment for a second wicket on the Domain cricket ground on application from the Headmaster, who mentioned that several of the masters intended to participate in the game with the boys during the coming season. Auditors' Report.The auditors' report was referred to the Finance Committee, to furnish a report to next meeting.
Resignation.—A letter was received from Professor Tucker, conveying his resignation as a member of the Board, owing to his inability to attend at the hour at which the meetings were held, and especially in view of his approaching departure for Melbourne. On the motion of Mr. Clark, it was resolved that an expression of regret at losing his valuable services should be forwarded to Professor Tucker.—On the motion of Mr. Upcon, seconded by Colonel Haultain, Mr. Thco. Cooper, jun., was appointed a member of the Board vice Proiensor Tucker.
School Examination.—Professor Tucker also forwarded his resignation as one of the examiners of the school. He state.d that having been appointed Professor of Classics at the Melbourne University, it was necessary that he Bhould be iu Melbourne to conduct the matriculation examination, and he would havo to leave Auckland immediately after the close of the term of the Auckland University. He would therefore be unable to take part in the examination of the school. This announcement was received by the Board with regret.
Scholarship Entries.—' have been received 7 entries for the senior aud 24 for the junior scholarships in connection with the school.
• .Railway Timk-table.— was resolved that a letter received from the Head-master in regard to some proposed alterations in the railway time table, be forwarded to the local manager of the railway,' together with a statement that the Board concur in the views expressed.
College Hifles. —An application was received from the acting captain of the College Rifles, for permission to use a portion of the space under one of the school corridors for the storage of arms and ammunition, as sufficient accommodation could not bo found in the Drill-shed.—The application was referred to Colonel Haultain and Judge Fenton with power to act.
