Heavy rains in the South yesterday. Shocks of earthquake continue to be felt in.Tasnjanj;*. Syme, the English freethought lecturer, is to visit New Zealand. The Duuniug Opera Troupe are at present performing in Dunedin'. The Invercargill people are anxious that the Bluff should be made a naval station. The half-yearly law examinations take place this year on the third Monday in March. Mr. William Conyers has been appointed Engineer and Secretary to. the Bluff Harbour Board. The Rev. Dr. Stewart has been elected an hon. member of the Dunedin Working Men's Temperance Club. It is thought that Sir John Hall, on his retnrii to New Zealand, will re-enter political life, but what his course will be is a matter of conjeoture. Yesterday was the second anniversary of the Rev. T. Spurgeon's services at the Choral Hall. Special reference was made to the fact in the Choral Hall. Mr. H. Butler, manager of the Te Aro branch of the Bauli ol New Zealand, Wellington, has reiMMvnl pr motion, and will be transferred to the head office at Auckland. There is a gaping man-trap in the footpath in Princes-street, opposite the site of the old Provincial Hotel, which requiros the attention of the authorities before an accident is recorded. ,The larrikin nuisance which has hitherto interrupted the services in St. Paul's Church was, we are glad to say, absent last night— a constable having been placed on duty in the vicinity'of the building. A few days ago the crop of oata from a five-acre paddock, the property of Mr. Davidson, Church Bush, Canterbury, was thrashed out, and the return of grain, exclusive of seconds, was 400 bushels. Sir James McCullough, of Viotoria, is expected to be a passenger by the s.s. Tararua, which arrives from the South to-day. Sir James is on a tour of this colony, and has already visited the Southern Island. He has engaged rooms at the Star Hotel.
