There was some talk of a postpone-, ment, but the stewards decided that it would be better to get tbe races off, and chance the weather clearing up during the afternoon. About twelve o'clock- there was a temporary break in the clouds, bat they closed in again, and heavy rain continued all the afternoon. The course was in- a'very sloppy condition. The following were the results : — Handicap Steeplechase of 130sovs. About three miles. Taiaroa was nearest the rails,.and Salvage just behind him, but - Williams: brought the latter up on the inßide, and riding him in the most determined: manner, i a fine finish was inevitable ; but while Siesta dropped out of it, a surprise ;came: in the i shape of Vanguard, who came up hand over hand on tbe outside, and collaring the | struggling pair fifty yards from the winning-| post, was just lifted in a after | a most exciting contest, by a head - from Taiaroa, who was in turn only a head in front of Salvage.
