It seema pretty certain now that fclie number of entries for the matches at the New Zealand Rifle Association prize firing, to com.menee at Ellerslie on Thursday next, will amount to the minimum of 200, proscribed for s» v-nrding the prizes of the matches. According to the existing programme, the prize money for the first match the Nelson Match for Kifles and Carbines—2oo and 500 yards, -7 rounds at -each distance, is £60. For the Canterbury Matoh, Rifles and Carbines, range 200 yards, JO rounds, there are 20 prizes, amounting to £50. For the third, Otago Match, Rifles or Carbines, 300 yards, 10 rounds, the number of prizes is also £20 ; the total amount being £50. For the Auckland Match, Rifles only, ranges 200, 500, and 600 yards, 7 rounds at each, the amount is £70, divided into 25 prizes. For the Wellington Match, Carbines only, the ranges are 200. 300, and 500 yards, 7 rounds at each. Prize money £50, divided ioto 20 prizes. Marlborough Matca : Rifles only ; 500 and 600 yards; 7 shots at each. Prize money £50, iu 20 prizes. Union Match: Carbines; 300 and 500 yards; 10 s'-.ots at each range. Prize money £40, in 11 prizes. The National Rifle Association Silver Medal is to be awarded ,to the highest aggregate scorer in the seven foregoing matches. The 20 highest aggregate rifle shots will then fire a second stage of 10 shots at 600 yards, the scores of which will be added to the aggregates made in the previous matches, and the highest aggregate scorer wdl be the winner of the Rifle Champion Belt, the gold star and £25 ; the second prize, silver star and £12 103: third, silver star and £S; fourth, £5; fifth, £3. The same rule will be adopted with regard to the carbine matches, except that the final range will be 500 yards. The first prize is the Carbine Belt, gold star, and £25 ; second, silver star and £10; third, silver star and £6; fourth, £4. and fifth, £2 103. This completes the matches for the belts and championship. The next match on the programme is the Civilian Match, open only to members of the association who are not volunteers ; ranges, 200 and 500 yards, 7 shots at each distance. £13 and half the ontrance money will be divided into 6 prizes. The Union S.S. Company's Cup will bo fired for by the twenty highest aggregates in the Nelson, Canterbury, Auckland, and Wellington Matches, the range 500 yards, 10 shots, when the highest grand aggregate scorer will be declared the winner of the cup for twelve months, and should the same competitor win it twice in succession, or three times at intervals, it becomes his private property. The Teamß Matches, rifle and carbine, will be very interesting matches. Each team entering will consist of five members, but companies have the privilege of tending one or more teams. The ranges are 200. 500, and 600 yards ; 7 shots at each. The first prize is £20 and the Rifle Challenge Cup. There are three other prizes—viz., £10, £5, and £3. For the carbine teams the ranges are 200, 3QO, and 500 yards ; 7 shots at eaoh. The first prize is the Carbine Challenge Cup and £15. The other prizes are £7 lQs, £5, and £3. Entries and Competitors. Auckland Garrhon'. —Mr. Bennett, the Secretary of the local oommittee, received entries on Saturday, and about 30 were received from the local companies, but as the entries are not closed, it being decided to keep them open to-day, wo are unable to publish the complete list of the Garrison entries. May, Crawford, and Williams. Whangabei.—Sergeant W. Cox, and J. McLeod. Thames.—Navals : P. Weir, H. Brownlee, E. Cartwrigbt, B. Luney, J. Cameron, J. Lloyd, F. Johns, and G. Gill. These are also entered as a team. Rifles : Lieutenant Lucas, N. Climo, A. Newdick, J. Thomas, T. Clark, G. Downie, J. Cloutt, J. Ingles, J. Gelpin, W. Patterson, W. Hawke, A. Thomas, and G. Simpson. Wairoa Sobth : — Lieutenant Crawford, Colour-Sergeant W. Moore, Sergeant McCormick, Corporal R. Coatts, Corporal F. J. tVilson, Volunteers D. Wright, J. W. Wallis, and G. A. Wilson. This troop has also entered for the Teams Match. The entries from tbe South are so far as can be ascertained as follows :— SOUTHERN COMPETITORS. Wellington. —Taylor, Ballinger, Leevers, Pixon, Randall, Robe, Scanlan, Davie, Franco, Howe, Holmeß, Kochen, McKenzie, Williams, Webb, Turner, McCredie, Franco, Ballinger, Hale, Shaw, Asher, Church, Ballinger, and Matthews. Other Districts. — Tbe entries from Marlborough, Nelson, and Taranaki have not yet been received, and those of Wanganui are not yet complete. A large contingent of the Southern representatives arrived by the Rotorua, and with them were the Hon. Major Baillie and Mr. Collins, of Wellington, staff officers. ' Amongst the arrivals were two ex-champions, Mr. Hoskins, of, Taranaki (formerly of the Thames), and Mr. Painter, of Nelson. A large number, the balance of the Southern contingent will arrive by the Tarawera to-day A large number of the visiting competitors visited the range at Ellerslie yesterday, and were much pleased witii its position and the general'£rrangement3 made.
