CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS.
A late number of the New Zealand Gazette gives the results of the Civil Service examinations of December. In the Junior Examination 94 candidates applied to be examined, S7 underwent examination, 36 caudidates passed, and 51 failed to pass. Of the candidates who failed—l 6 failed in all 4 subjects, 13 in 3 subjects, 12 in 2, 10 in 1 ; 36 failed in English, 34 in arithmetic, 38 in history, 29 in geography. Of the 36 who passed in the junior division, 10 were from Auckland, as follow : — Joseph Sykes, Auckland. Elementary school, 2 years ; City East School, U years ; Auckland College and Grammar School, 3J years. Oliver Nicholson, Auckland. Rev. "W. Taylor"s, 1 years; Auckland College and Grammar School, tfr George Arthur Gribbin, Auckland, 'Newton East School, S years; Auckland College and Grammar School, 3 years. Frederick William Norton. North Wairoa. Auckland High School, 1 year; Auckland College and Grammar School, 5 years. ■ Archibald Campbell, Auckland. Waiuku District School, 5 years ; Ponsonby District School, \\ years; Auckland College and Grammar School, 1$ years. James Christie, Auckland Karaka School, Thames, 3 years : Kaueranga District School, 4 years; Auckland College and Grammar School, 1} years. Ernest Henry Kempthorne, Auckland. Church of England Grammar School, Parnell, 5 J years. William James Byburn, Auckland. Panmure School, years;. Mount Hobson School, 3i years ; City East School, I year; Auckland College and Grammar School, 2 years. Edward Ker Jlulgan, Onehunga. Jlr. Portor's, Enniskillen, li years; Armagh College, 2.V years. William Edwin Carew Moss, uckland. Church of England Grammar School, Parnell, 6 years. James Stewart, Auckland. Auckland College and Grammar School, 5 years. In the senior examination 42 candidates applied to be examined, 36 underwent examination, 13 passed, and 23 failed. Thirtysix examined, and 18 failed to pass in English, 30 examined and 5 failed in Latin, 36 examined and 5 failed in arithmetic, 36 examined and S failed in geography, 14 examined and 4 failed in trigonometry, 33 examined and 11 failed in algebra, 33 examined and 10 failed in geometry, 4 examined and 2 failed in physical science, 31 examined and 9 failed in history.
