WAIPU.
A very melancholy event happened last week—the sudden death of the wife of Mr. H. Jeffries, telegraphist at this station. Mrs. Jeffries had been an invalid for some time, but her death was quite unexpected, and caused a great shock through the settlement. The funeral was very numerously attended, above one hundred and twenty horsemen being present. Tenders are called for widening and bridging the Gorge Road, from Maungaturoto to Waipu. The contract will be a heavy one, as it is all in one section. Had it been let in three sections, several of tho Waipu settlers would have tendered for the work, which would probably have been done much cheaper. Mrs. Glenny lectured, on Monday last, on the "Identity." The lecture was to have been given in the Central schoolroom, but it became so thronged that it was found necessary to adjourn to the Church, which was granted on the occasion. Three hundred persons were present, and listened with great attention to the lecture. Several individuals have since been trying to trace their descent from particular tribes, and in their own opinion have succeeded. Mrs. Glenny lectures again to-night.—[Corres-pondent, April 28.]
