FIRE AT INVERCARGILL.

[by telegraph, press association;] Invercargill, Saturday. Yesterday a disastrous fire occurred about 5 o'clock in the morning in l}evon-streefc, in the premises occupied by Mr. Smith, tcabinetmaker. The brigade were quickly on he ground, but their efforts were to a great extent paralyzed by the want of water. Mr. Smith's building, together with the house he lived in, were burnt to the eround, and the adjoining houses of Mr. Falconer and Mr. Saunders were only saved by great exertions on the part of the brigade. The buildings on the other side of the street were also in considerable danger, but, through the aid o£ wet blankets and other appliances, the fire did not spread to the other side. Mr. Smith was only insured in the New Zealand Company for £200. His loss, over and above the insurance, is estimated at something like £1000.
