HAWKE'S BAY.
By the Star of the South we lmve late Tlawke's Bay papers and southern telegrams. Alluding to the Kaimanawa, the Herald of tho 20th ultimo, says : — "On Thursday, Mi 1 . Ormoud, accompanied by Lieutenant -Colonel McDonnell and by Mr. Bracken and one of his party—who, with great courtesy and willingness, escorted them there —visited the Kaiiuanawa ranges. A ride of some miles, including a crossing of tho WaiJcatc v ivcr, brought the parly to the edge of the "hush. Leaving riicir horses, a walk of Iwo miles more through the forest led to the creek iu which the specimens sent to Dr. Feathers! on by Cnptain McDonnell were found. The creek, which is a mountain torrent running in a narrow "orgo over boulders, had to lie travelled some miles to view the reels Mr. Bracken had discovered. Three good reefs were visited, mill quartz Liken from each has been brought down by Mr. Orinond, who intends forwarding tho same to Dr. Hector for analisatiou. The reef from which the gold bearing specimens originally tested were taken, is. as formerly reported, covered by a"large land slip, but. Mr. Bracken intends to take ad van! age of the lirst flood to utilise tinsome in removing it, and will then at once communicate ami send specimens down. Arrangements have been made by Mr. Ormond to facilitate this by giving the use of return Government pack'horses for the carriage or any quartz specimens in which gold can be seen, in order that, as speedily as possible, full information may be obtained of the real character of 1 lie Held. Both Lieuf.-Colonel McDonnell and Mr. Ormond returned in the evening after a severe day's work in the ranges, much pleased with what they had seen, and entertaining sanguine hopes of the Kaimanawa as a future goldlield. The fullest information was given by Mr. Bracken as to his prospecting operations in this stream and other parts of the Kiiimanawa. He evidently is an experienced digger and straightforward man, who drsires to see the Kaiinanawa Held proved and thrown open. HKTU"K2f. Mr. Ormond. left Tokiiuo cm Friday morning, which was a very wet day at Taupo, and arrived iu Napier early on Saturday afternoon. He considers the distance not much over 100
