MEETING OF ELECTORS OF THE PENSIONERS SETTLEMENTS.

A L.vkgk number of the electors of the above settlements met; at M' Funis' Hotel, Uowick, on Friday evruiug, Mr. Every Maclean, in the chair. The proceedings commenced with a dispute as to whether the meeting should disperse or not, and in consequence of the disturbance Mr. Maclean left the chair. On the .vrittcu notice calling the meeting being produced, it was determined to proceed, and Mr. Maclean resumed the chair. Captain Freer then addressed the meeting, and was very favourably received ; he was followed by Dr." Hovell, who was listened to patiently enough, but who did not. appear to have marie any great impression, and at the conclusion of his speech was informed that the pensioners would not vote for him on account of his having wanted Mr. Maclean to lino a man .CI for shooting a pheasant. Mr. ICkuic then addressed the electors. He stated that he, generally speaking, agreed with the views held by Captain Freer, but could not endorse many'of t lie remarks made by Dr. Hovell. He was in favour oC secti.'ar education, and opposed to protection. He was in favour of the ballot. Mr. White then came forward, and was •rivetoil with anything but a favourable reception, lie was constantly interrupted, whilst speaking, with ironical cheers and laughter Mr. Kkhr replied to some of Mr. : White's statements, and referred to an indignation mooting directed against, himself, which had been called, and at which only Mr. White was present. A show of hands was called, resulting as under: - Freer 13 Hovell 13 Ken 1 13 White 22 Brookfield 2 Mr. Barry was then voted to the chair while Mr. M'Lean made a statement in reference to certain political mutters. To this M . Kerr replied, and the meeting then concluded with the usual vote of thanks.
