ANNUAL MEETING OF THE RATEPAYERS OF THE MANGAREI DISTRICT.
Tire annual meeting of the ratepayers of the above 1 district was held at the Criterion Hotel, Otahuhu, on Tuesday last, to hear a statement of the accounts and t to choose fresh trustees, <fce., for the ensuing year. 1 There was a full attend hdco. £ Mr. Yebcoe proposed that Mr. H. S. Andrews take the chair. ' ' Seconded by Mr. Scott, senr. ' The Ch aibman then explained to the meeting the ' amount of work (which was considfrable) that had j been done during the past year. He said that it had been stited by some of the ratepayers of the district that such could not bo done, but the road had been ' re-metalled, and fresh roads had been made in di<- , tricts where 110 road previouslyjexisted, and had been : done in an rffieient nvinntr. Mr. J. Yeucob rose to suggest that in future the Trustees determine tint they will not allow metal exceeding a certain size to be put upon the road*, as some part of the road was metalled with nothing less | than boulders. Mr. JohX Robivson* proposed that Mr. TT. Vercoe and Mr. JamC3 liobertson, junr., be auditors of the accounts. Seconded by Mr. J. Wallace, and carricd unanimouily. Balance in Bank . . . • 18 4 5 Amount of rate collected . . . 427 12 0 Arrears of rate . . . • 310 0 Provincial Government .... 417 0 0 £866 7 2 The Chairman' then read the new Aet of the Provincial Council, viz., that in future tho rate must be levied upon the selling value of tho land, instead of per acreage as formerly, which disconcerted a few of the ratepayers; some nicely endeavouring to construe the Act, that a universal value per aero of the whole district could and should be made. But tho Chairman had provided himself with calculations as well aB legal advice upon the matter, and explained away those mistaken ideas of some of the gentlemen present. It was then proposed by Mr. Vp.rcok, seconded by Mr. R. Hat.l, " That a rate of one penny in the pound valuation be adopted." An amendment was then propoaod by Mr. E. Coo?ER eeoonded by Mr. Gib3ox, That a rate of one half-penny in the pound valuation be adopted." The amendment was then put and carried unanimously. Proposed by Mr. John Wallace, scconued by Mr. J. Robinson*, ''That tho following gentlemen bo chosen Trustees for the ensuing year, viz , Messrs. James Robertson, junr., R.' Hall, Edward Cooper, George Hawke;"' Carried unanimously, Mr. J. Vercoe proposed a vote of thanks to the retiring Trustees of the past year, which was seconded by Mr. O. Siiiphbbd, and carried unanimously. The meeting then terminated.
